The Real Circus of Climate Chaos is Coming

“Brace Yourself” is a series of printed and animated posters that utilize dynamic elements and a circus of turmoil theme to highlight the “global boiling” era.

Creative Brief

As the UN has declared, we now live in the “global boiling” era, with the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and President Donald Trump’s energy and environmental policies. Alongside natural catastrophes in the US, such as floods, hurricanes, air pollution, ocean pollution, droughts, and various other natural disasters, it is clear that everyone will be impact by the consequences of the climate crisis.

Given the combination of political/activism, experimental poster design, loud messaging, and circus elements, I want to highlight the turmoil and chaotic consequences we will face in the coming years, or perhaps months. The show of (global boiling) has just begun, and I aim to communicate the horrifying consequences and evoke a sense of urgency in the audience.

Approach

  • The poster is designed using found images and various web-based generative AI tools to create the exact images from prompts I envisioned.
  • I aimed to highlight the chaos while experimenting with new layouts, using diagonals to create drama.
  • For motion graphics, I use various web-based generative AI tools to transform my sketches from 2D to animated 3D.
  • Then I integrate them with different kinds of found footage.
  • The video is edited using Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and Premiere.
  • The “fire” typefaces for both artworks were handwritten and then manipulated through photo editing. Generative AI was subsequently used to transform them into animated 3D.
  • I utilize the main soundtrack from David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive” (2001) to evoke hectic and surreal vibes. Additionally, found audio is incorporated to create a cohesive and immersive experience.

Impact

  • There are some adjustments to be made. Some transitions in the videos are not aligning as I hoped.
  • For animated poster, the titles using fire elements are difficult to read because the flames are obscuring them.
  • The 3D representation of President Trump could be enhanced to make it more grotesque and dramatic.
