Political Intimacy : The R3TURN

May 13 - Aug 1, 2022

6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Recess, 46 Washington Ave, Brooklyn, NY

Political Intimacy is a collaborative initiative between Pratt Fine Arts Civic Engagement, Pratt Institute students, artist fellows, and local leaders, including Senatorial Candidate Maya Contreras, City Councilmember Chi Ossé, State Assembly Member Phara Souffrant Forrest, and City Councilmember Shahana Hanif. This program engages system-impacted youth through the Recess Assembly, aiming to demystify and humanize interactions with our local electoral system.
Through interviews and art-making sessions with our representatives, we empower youth to creatively engage in civic discussions about issues they care about, such as environmental justice, mutual aid, mental health, housing justice, gender inclusivity, racial inequality, food insecurity, immigrants' rights, the establishment of cooperative systems, and accessibility for people with disabilities.

Poster Design

I created exhibition posters that harmoniously integrate with New York City's urban landscape, amplifying the voices of collaborators dedicated to cultural and social justice causes - including gender inclusivity, racial equality, environmental awareness, food security, immigration, cooperatives, and accessibility initiatives - seamlessly blending with the city's backdrop while highlighting the important work of these collaborators.

Collaborative Design: Gallery Collage Poster

I also designed a collage poster for display in the gallery, featuring images selected by collaborators living in District 39, Brooklyn, which represent their cultural, social, and political concerns. This innovative poster further incorporates Augmented Reality (AR) technology, allowing the audience to engage with 3D elements in the physical space, creating a truly immersive experience.

Personal Collage Poster

Title: Another Workplace is Possible

This initiative for social change focuses on encouraging communities to start their own cooperative systems, whether for clothing businesses, food catering, home care, or guest services. For this exhibition, I designed a 30x40 inch (approximately) 3D-like collage poster, decorated with gemstones, crystals, and other found materials. The poster depicts workers from diverse backgrounds with a positive vibe, illustrating that when communities form cooperative systems—run, managed, and owned by their own members—they can take pride in their work and find happiness. Despite the hard work involved, collaborative management allows everyone to have a voice, demonstrating that another world or workplace is possible.

Additionally, I created digital posters for this initiative, integrated with AR and QR codes to provide online information about what a cooperative means and the legal aspects involved. This allows the audience to experience not just the elaborate physical poster but also its animated online version and augmented reality through their phones.
